In and Around Clay County by Penny Vaughan

"In and Around Clay County" Pix of Clay County flora and architecture. All these pictures were taken in Clay County by Penelope Vaughan using an Olympus Evolt 500. This set of pix are a variety of things seen in Clay County this time of year. This time I went also for some local architecture, the Court House. I wanted to capture the courthouse in ways I have not seen, black and white and at night. I also captured some Clay County spring flora blooming in and around towns, as well as some local insects and reptiles. The snake is a juvenile Gray Rat snake, great for ridding yards of mice and rats. This is a non venomous snake. The butterfly picture is a Swallowtail lit upon a blooming Azalea.

I only had a Casio Exilim camera in my purse, but still got some photos of Clay County. Nancy Maners Clanton, AL 35045

Clay County School Board chooses mascot & colors for consolidated high school

Clay County School Board chooses mascot, colors for consolidated high school
by Jason Bacaj; Anniston Star

Feb 09, 2011

Clay County school board members unanimously voted red, white and blue the colors of the new consolidated high school, and chose “Volunteers” as the mascot.

The vote ended a decision process that began during the 2010 football season and swept up much of the community.

“This is not taken lightly,” said Garey Reynolds, school superintendent, after the vote. “It’s something that every one of us goes to bed with every night.”

Two people at the meeting spoke up about how the school board members ignored student input they had requested.

“The children did vote on it and they are disheartened,” said Jacob Haynes, after the board voted.

If the board wasn’t going to use the students’ recommendation, it shouldn’t have asked for it, Haynes said.

A group of 14 students from Lineville High School and Clay County High School worked to pick three color schemes and mascots at Reynolds’ request. The county’s collective high school student body voted on the choices and selected burnt orange, black and white as the colors and “longhorns” as the mascot.

No board members seconded the motion to vote on that color scheme and mascot at the January school board meet-ing, minutes show.

Calls from the community – including state Sen. Gerald Dial – led board member Denise McDonald to believe burnt orange, black and white were bad colors for the new school.

“Everybody said it looked like Halloween,” McDonald said from her seat on the elevated L-shaped bench at the front of the room.

In his office after the meeting, Reynolds sat heavily in his chair and said he was glad this was taken care of. He said he doesn’t know what the next step in the process is and won’t start thinking about it until Wednesday.

“It is a real challenge,” Reynolds said of getting the historic rivals to come together.

It’s the passion of the county, said Steve Giddens, Lineville High School assistant principal and head football coach. He jokingly suggested naming the new high school “Rivals High.”

Winford McDonald stood up at the meeting and said the only proper way to start a new county school is to shed any ties to Lineville or Clay County High School.

Deciding new colors and a new mascot is not a fun process, Reynolds said. He doesn’t know when a logo will be designed or a name will be chosen.

But there’s a great new facility coming together just a few miles north of the school board’s offices, he said from behind a cluttered desk. Construction is coming along despite the cold and wet weather. Workers have already laid the gym’s foundation, he said.

“We’re not going to quit,” Reynolds said, glasses in hand. “We’re going to keep on.”

2514705407_e48fd41663_m1Ashland, shown on the Talladega County 1860 census as the COURT HILL voting precinct, was first known as “Center Point” because of its central location between the Talladega and Wedowee judicial centers.

In 1867, the name was changed to Ashland in honor of Henry Clay’s “Ashland Plantation” located in Lexington, Kentucky. About 1900, Ashland was chosen as the county seat and the site of the courthouse and the governing bodies of Clay County.

Located in the beautiful mountainous Piedmont Plateau, Ashland’s elevation of 1,130 feet above sea level, is the highest of any incorporated municipality in the state.

2566691266_dfe7940454_m1On February 3, 1870, the name of the town changed from County Line to Lineville. The name change was made because the Randolph/Talladega county line running directly through the town had gone away with the establishment of Clay County. In short, the town was no longer situated on a county line. However, the citizens insisted upon keeping something familiar in the new name – thus “Lineville” was a compromise of sorts. The city of Lineville was incorporated on December 14, 1898.
