Ashland Businesses Sponsor “Second Saturday on the Square”
Many people who grew up in rural counties can remember a special weekly entertainment that preceded television – going to town on Saturday. Farmers and other folks from near and far would crank up their pickups or cars and head for town. Some still used mules and wagons for the trip.
Years ago, several grocery and dry goods stores were located on the square around the Clay County Courthouse in Ashland. While grown-ups were involved with stocking up for the next week, children could also find plenty to do.
Most Saturdays the Ashland Theatre would show a cowboy movie along with a serial, a cartoon, and a newsreel that reviewed recent events around the nation. Of course, Saturday in town was also a handy time for catching up on the latest local news.
This year businesses in Ashland are promoting a once-a-month return to special downtown Saturday activities. They are cranking up a series of events that will be held on the second Saturday of each month.
If you would like to be a vendor please contact Bob Roberts at the Garden Terrace Cafe at 256-354-3113. Vendors setup at 7 AM and the event runs from 8 AM to Noon.

SHEET SALE
Hi, everybody! Last year at this time we were able to offer great buys for our sheet sale, and we are proud that we can offer this sale again this year. Here’s the DEAL…For anyone who has had pictures made here that have already been ordered from, you can purchase additional “sheets” (or units) for $25 per unit. This is significant savings over regular pricing, and what makes this sale so great is that they are having it at the perfect time of the year to help us all start our holiday shopping. Grandparents love nothing more for Christmas than pictures of their grandchildren.
The only stipulation to the sale is that it has to be from sessions that they have already done all the lab color work to, and that’s the reason it has to be from images that have already been ordered from. So go grab your previews or images and get the number off the back and call us with your order. (The date of the session will show in the middle of your name, so be sure not to leave this part out). Since we have our files handy for the last 3 years, you can order from any session from 2008-2011.
This Sale will end on Friday, Sept. 30th, so don’t delay! The stipulation they put on the studio is that all orders have to be sent at the same time. We will send our order at the end of the day on the 30th, so we are putting a 3:00 pm deadline Friday for the Sale.
To show you what a good deal this is, here are the regular prices you would spend for pictures:
1-8×10 – Reg $30, Now $25
2-5×7′s – Reg $44, Now $25
4-4×5′s - Reg $48, Now $25
8 wallets – Reg $30, Now $25
1-5×7 & 4wallets - Reg $37, Now $25
Now listen, I just know when you got your pictures home, there was something else you probably wished you had ordered, so now’s your chance to get it and to get it on Sale!! What could be better than that? Please call us at 256.354.3278.

"In and Around Clay County" Pix of Clay County flora and architecture. All these pictures were taken in Clay County by Penelope Vaughan using an Olympus Evolt 500. This set of pix are a variety of things seen in Clay County this time of year. This time I went also for some local architecture, the Court House. I wanted to capture the courthouse in ways I have not seen, black and white and at night. I also captured some Clay County spring flora blooming in and around towns, as well as some local insects and reptiles. The snake is a juvenile Gray Rat snake, great for ridding yards of mice and rats. This is a non venomous snake. The butterfly picture is a Swallowtail lit upon a blooming Azalea.

On April 11, we came to Clay County for the “Second Saturday on the Ashland Square” and to visit my friend’s grandmother’s old homeplace. We had a great time while there renewing old acquaintances and meeting new friends. This is a picture that was made at Rays Crossroads (CR 5 and CR 34). I only had a Casio Exilim camera in my purse, but still got some photos of Clay County. Nancy Maners Clanton, AL 35045
