Watch a Video of Last Year’s Races
Calling all boat regatta racers…
Join us at the Clay County Farmers Market at 86838 Hwy 9, Lineville, AL on Tuesday, February 16th; 6 pm – 8 pm to learn how to build a cardboard boat. During the boring winter it will be a fun project for you, your club/team/church group or for your co-workers… because you row your craft in the hilariously funny 2nd Annual Randolph County Animal Shelter Paddlin’ 4 Paws Cardboard Boat Regatta Races at the Chimney Cove Boat Show, Saturday, 5/22/2010. Races begin at 1pm.
The Clinic:
On Tuesday 2/16, RCAS and Lake Wedowee Air Junkeys are hosting a boat builders clinic. There
will be cruisers from last year’s race on display. And we will teach you the skills we learned while building those boats.
- How to design your boat for floatation, stability and, speed
- What construction materials you may use
- How to find the best corrugated cardboard
- How to bond cardboard pieces together
- How to waterproof your vessel
- How to pre-register for discounts on boat building supplies & cardboard
- Retailers/corporate sponsorship perks that could help your team
Yes, cardboard WILL float (at least for awhile)
There are more photos and info at www.highairs.com. See who sank, who swam their boat in, who raced twice, and who won photo plaque awards and bragging rights for a year. (Our website is being redesigned to load faster and add 2010 info, so be patient !) To further encourage you….
WHO – WHAT – HOW – WHY
You, or you and your 20 best friends from church or work or ?…may dress in costume, bring your own music and rooting section to cheer you on. You gently step into your boat from the dock and when the whistle blows you row like mad around the course buoys to the finish line. Even if you swim your sinking boat to shore you are still eligible for prizes. When your boat and entire team arrive together at the boat ramp, your official time is recorded. You may win the:
- Titanic Award: most spectacular sinking and best effort NOT to (the boat must have traveled more than 50′)
- Pint Size Pirate Award (average age of crew is 12 or under)
- Old Wheezy Geezer award (average age of crew is 55 and over)
- Popeye’s Spinach Award (all rowers are from the same school)
- Rah ! Rah ! Award (most enthusiastic team and pit crew from the time you check in til you finish the race)
- Moby Dick Award (most creative or whimsical design or theme)
- Captain Bligh’s Award (best “clean” boat name – this is a family event !)
- Beastly Beauty Award (make that ugly boat look crusty or awful)
- Fastest Raft
- Fastest Boat
