As once stated in a Presidential Proclamation, today there is, and perhaps there always will be, conflict in the world. But the United States fortunately enjoys peace and freedom. Like other things of great value, this security comes with a price. Part of the cost has already been paid by Americans who answered the call to military duty when their country needed them. They served in 12 wars from the Revolution to the War in Iraq, earning the special distinction “veteran”. But another part of freedom’s cost must continue to be paid long after the guns have been silenced. This debt is owed American’s veterans. Some need their country’s help, even as their country once needed theirs, to readjust, to recover from wounds, or to overcome hardships of age and infirmity. Most need and ask nothing in repayment of their sacrifices. Let us continue to help those veterans in need with the greatest possible compassion and efficiency. To the rest, since they ask no special help, we can best pay tribute this day by recognizing what they have achieved and joining them in their resolve to keep America strong and free.

The Children’s Policy Council, in conjunction with First Assembly Christian School, would like to extend an invitation to join a letter writing campaign aimed at honoring local veterans. Our desire is to remember the sacrifices made by Clay County’s service men and women. Our goal is to reach all eight hundred or so veterans living within Clay County. We have contacted Rochelle Osbourn, of the Clay County Department of Veterans Affairs about this campaign, and she has committed her assistance.

Please note, due to confidentiality laws, Ms. Osbourn cannot release the names or addresses of veterans. Therefore, all letters must be submitted in unsealed, stamped envelopes; which she will then address. They should be written in such a manner as to be appropriate for either a man or a woman. All letters must be turned in to Ms. Osbourn’s office no later than October 12th, she works Tuesdays and Thursday and her office is located at the Old Health Dept Building, 93 County Road 31, Ashland, Al 36251, contact number 256-354-7311.

During the months of October and November, our goal here at First Assembly Christian School will be to instill the importance of honoring veterans to our students. We call this endeavor Operation: Student to Veteran. We understand unless you are directly affected by the war, you may not understand the significant price paid by those who serve our country.

On November 11, 2009, we will sponsor a luncheon honoring all Clay County veterans. First Assembly Christian School has declared this a community service day, and students will be involved in every aspect of this project. From table decoration and favors to the desserts served, our students will demonstrate their service to God by honoring these veterans.

We hope to build upon this theme annually. Certainly, we want to give everyone an opportunity to honor our veterans. We think it is extremely important that our children have this opportunity and experience. We hope our initiative helps to promote a desire for our entire community to seek ways to honor these unsung heroes. Our children, and even we as adults, benefit from remembering our nation’s proud heritage. America was built upon the sacrifices of noble men and women. Let us not forget and more importantly, let us teach our children not to forget.

Dear Teachers and Supporters,

We at the Children’s Policy Council would like to extend an invitation to join a letter writing campaign aimed at honoring local veterans. Our desire is to remember the sacrifices made by Clay County’s service men and women. Our goal is to reach all eight hundred or so veterans living within Clay County. We have contacted Rochelle Osbourn, of the Clay County Department of Veterans Affairs about this campaign and she has committed her assistance. Our hope is that you will join us in this endeavor. The Mission: encourage your students to write letters to our veterans and help them understand what it means to be a veteran and why we owe them a debt of gratitude.

Osbourn’s office no later than October 12th, she works Tuesdays and Thursday and her office is located at the Old Health Dept Building, 93 County Road 31, Ashland, Al 36251, contact number 256-354-7311 .

We hope to build upon this theme annually and welcome all suggestions as to how this may be accomplished. Certainly, we want to give everyone an opportunity to honor our veterans, we think it is extremely important that our children have this opportunity and experience, so we ask for your support and participation in this venture. Our children, even we as adults, benefit from remembering our nation’s proud heritage. America was built upon the sacrifices of noble men and women. Let us not forget and more importantly, let us teach our children not to forget.

Thank you in advance for supporting this program.

In selecting animal care as the 2009 national focus, the Committee acknowledged that providing a forum for discussion of this issue is consistent with the Farm-City mission of cultivating greater understanding among rural and urban residents.

The “Farmers Care – For Animals and You” contest gives students a chance to explore the interdependence of farms and cities. Although our food supply begins with farmers providing food, water, shelter and medical care for their animals, the chain also includes transportation, processing and even cooking.

The theme gives students freedom to use their imaginations as they explore the relationship between farm and city with a special focus on the way farmers care for their animals and our food.

The contest is sponsored by the Farm-City Committee of Alabama, P.O. Box 11000, Montgomery, AL 36191-0001, in cooperation with Alabama Ag in the Classroom. More information for teachers and students is available online at www.AlfaFarmers.org, www.AlabamaAITC.org and www.AgEducate.org or by contacting your local Alabama Cooperative Extension System office.

Entry is open to all students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade and must be the original work of the student. There are two categories of competition: K – 3 grades and 4 – 6 grades. First and Second Place winners will be named in each category.

State winners in the poster and essay contests will be featured in the Alabama Farm-City Committee’s 2011 Farm-City Calendar.

Deadline for entry at the state level is March 1, 2010. Winners will be notified by mail no later than April 1. Award winners will be announced at the state Farm-City Awards Luncheon in April.
