ALABAMA TAKES CENTER STAGE AS HOLLYWOOD HIGHLIGHTS HUNTSVILLE’S SPACE CAMP

SPACE CAMP® and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center will be featured in a made-for-TV movie, Sunday Night, January 29^th on ABC at 9/8pm central.  The movie, “A Smile as Big as the Moon,” is a true story based on the novel written by Mike Kersjes.

There are numerous mentions in the movie about Huntsville and traveling to Alabama to attend Space Camp.  The filming in Huntsville was made possible thanks to assistance from the Alabama Film Office and the Alabama Tourism Department. The Space Center extends special appreciation to Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, State Tourism Director Lee Sentell and to Kathy Faulk and Tommy Fell in the Alabama Film Office.

Mike Kersjes brought the first group of special needs children to attend Space Camp in 1988.  Kerjses, a coach and special education teacher in Grand Rapids, Michigan, helped his students achieve their impossible dream of attending Space Camp at a time when the camp accepted mainly gifted students.  In order to get his students into the camp, Kersjes contacted Dr. Deborah Barnhart, who at the time was Director of Space Camp Operations and is today the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s CEO and Executive Director.

SKYWARN Facts

SKYWARN is the National Weather Service (NWS) program of trained volunteer weather spotters.  Storm spotters come from many walks of life, including fire fighters, law enforcement, and amateur radio operators.  SKYWARN spotters coordinate with local emergency management officials and send reports of weather based phenomena to the NWS.

In addition to serving as a community’s first line of defense against dangerous storms, spotters provide important information to warning forecasters who make critical warning decisions.  SKYWARN storm spotters play a critical role of giving the NWS vital ground truth data, which helps the NWS perform its primary mission, to save lives and property.

Central High School of Clay County to Open Fall 2012

We are a rural school system serving approximately 2100 students.  We have four main schools with six campuses. Ashland Elementary Main Campus (2-6) and grades K-1 are served at the primary school location on Alabama Highway 77. Clay County High School serves grades 7-12 is also located in Ashland and holds six state football championships since 1994. Two of their students have held National Junior Beta Club Officer Positions, and four have held State Junior Beta Club Officer Positions since 2000. Lineville Elementary School Main Campus serves grades K-5, and 6th grade is located on Washington Street, along with the Alternative Setting for our school system. Lineville High School serves grades 7-12 and is located on Main Street in Lineville.  All Clay County School locations including the Central Office and Bus Shop are connected by 1 GB fiber network. Centralized software includes INOW for student management which includes STI Home, transportation software Fleetrunner, Atriuum for library media management, SchoolCast for emergency staff and student notification,Accelerated Reader, PLATO, Reading Coach and CLASSWORKS for curriculum intergration.  All elementary classrooms are equipped with 21st Century Equipment to include items such as overhead projectors and screens, interactive boards or pads, digital document cameras, etc.  About 80% the high school classrooms have 21st Century Classrooms. Both high schools have ACCESS Distance Learning Labs installed, providing students with online classes.  Clay County will consolidate both high schools beginning August, 2012.  A new central high school (grades 7-12) is currently under construction which includes athletic facilities.  The Central High School of Clay County will be located at 1 Bob Riley Drive Lineville AL 36266.
