Ashland Businesses Sponsor “Second Saturday on the Square”

Many people who grew up in rural counties can remember a special weekly entertainment that preceded television – going to town on Saturday. Farmers and other folks from near and far would crank up their pickups or cars and head for town. Some still used mules and wagons for the trip.

Years ago, several grocery and dry goods stores were located on the square around the Clay County Courthouse in Ashland. While grown-ups were involved with stocking up for the next week, children could also find plenty to do.

Most Saturdays the Ashland Theatre would show a cowboy movie along with a serial, a cartoon, and a newsreel that reviewed recent events around the nation. Of course, Saturday in town was also a handy time for catching up on the latest local news.

This year businesses in Ashland are promoting a once-a-month return to special downtown Saturday activities. They are cranking up a series of events that will be held on the second Saturday of each month.

Its a Wonderful Life- 1940’s Radio Play Stage Show

I promise you’ve never SEEN anything like this before! Inspired by the classic American film, It’s a Wonderful Life, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is performed as a 1940s live radio broadcast in front of a studio audience. Actors perform the dozens of characters in the radio play and there will be sound effect artists actually creating the sound effects right before your eyes! The Chicago Tribune has said:”Terrific! The best holiday choice around! The classic movie retold through this clever faux period broadcast, a genre it seems to fit with remarkable ease. If you cry every time you see the movie, you’ll be blubbering away right on cue. Guaranteed. You might well be blubbering more. The kind of old-fashioned, personalized holiday environment that we all crave but usually fail to find. Exceptional! Works beautifully.” Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for senior citizens and students.

Thats a wrap on the 2010 series of events. But, as always keep us in mind for birthday party rentals, concerts, speakers, weddings, and other special events. Our prices are great and you wont find a more unique location for your next big event! We are also always looking for volunteers, costume donations, and suggestions on how we can make this a theatre you are proud to support. Thank you so much for all you do and we hope to see you each time the curtain opens this year!

Let us Entertain you in 2010!

Plasticulture Workshop Given by Coosa County Extension Office

July 7, 2010
7:00 amto8:30 am

Growers,

Here is information about a plasticulture meeting in Coosa county. We can’t talk about plasticulture without talking about irrigation. Therefore, if you need more information on vegetable irrigation this will be a good meeting to see how drip irrigation and plasticulture work in vegetable production. Let me or the Coosa county extension office know if you plan to attend.

Plasticulture Workshop Coming

One of the latest trends in vegetable production is the use of a method of farming called “Plasti-culture”.  This is a system of using plastic mulch and drip irrigation to manage weeds while maintaining a good water supply to the plants.  This production method can be used to grow anything from tomatoes, to watermelons and strawberries. While this system can be installed by hand on small areas, there is now specialized equipment that may be pulled behind a tractor to install larger areas in a quick and efficient manner.

A demonstration plot has been established on the Farm of Mr. John Neighbors in the Fishpond Community through a grant from the Coosa Valley R.C. & D Council in cooperation with the Coosa County Extension Office.  To introduce this farming method and discuss its advantages and disadvantages, a workshop has been planned for Wednesday, July 7, 2010.  Since the daytime temperatures are getting pretty high, the workshop will be held in the early morning and be rather brief, beginning at 7:00 a.m. and concluding by around 8:30 a.m.

Regional Extension Agent for Commercial Horticulture, Chip East will discuss how to install the system and how to manage the various crops that can be grown.  Jeff Colvin, with the R. C. & D Council will also be present to discuss the equipment available through the Council and answer questions.   There is no charge for the program, but pre-registration is required by calling the Coosa County Extension Office at 256-377-4713. I know this meeting is short notice and for that reason we need you to call and register as soon as possible.
